Ceddanne Rafaela hit two solo home runs as the Boston Red Sox defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-2 on Saturday, overcoming a 10-4 disadvantage in hits.

The victory clinched Boston’s first regular-season series win at Dodger Stadium since August 2013. The Red Sox also won Friday’s series opener 9-4.

Rafaela produced half of Boston’s hits

Rafaela went 2-for-4, scored twice and drove in two runs, accounting for half of Boston’s hits and both of its home runs.

He opened the scoring with a solo homer in the first inning. After Teoscar Hernández put Los Angeles ahead with a two-run homer in the second, Rafaela tied the game with another solo shot in the third.

Boston did not record another run until the eighth inning.

Andruw Monasterio and Jarren Duran reached before Connor Wong grounded into a double play, allowing Monasterio to score the go-ahead run.

Boston won despite being outhit 10-4

Los Angeles collected 10 hits, including three each from Freddie Freeman and Hernández, but did not score after the second inning.

The Dodgers had more than twice as many hits as Boston, yet the Red Sox made more of their limited opportunities. Boston’s four hits included Rafaela’s two homers and the two eighth-inning hits that created the winning run.

Los Angeles struck out eight times, compared with four strikeouts for Boston.

Tolle limited the damage

Red Sox starter Payton Tolle allowed nine hits and two earned runs across six innings, striking out seven and walking two.

The Dodgers repeatedly reached base against Tolle, but their only scoring play was Hernández’s second-inning homer.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto worked eight innings for Los Angeles. He allowed four hits, three runs and one walk while striking out three, with Rafaela responsible for both home runs against him.

Boston entered the weekend facing a Dodgers team leading the National League West, but won the first two games of the three-game series.

The Red Sox had not won a regular-season series at Dodger Stadium since taking two of three games there in 2013. Los Angeles won the clubs’ next two regular-season series at the stadium, taking two of three in 2016 and sweeping three games in 2024.

Saturday’s result also showed how little offense can be enough when the highest-value hits arrive at the right moments. Boston produced only four hits but converted them into three runs, while Los Angeles scored twice from 10.
